A winter storm is expected to move through our area this weekend, and we know extreme cold can raise questions for pet parents. We want to reassure you: Scout’s Honor will be open, fully staffed (including overnight), and fully prepared to care for your dogs safely and thoughtfully. If you have a reservation this weekend through Tuesday there are no penalities for late cancellation due to extreme weather. Stay safe!

What to Expect at Scout’s Honor During the Storm:

Open & Fully Staffed

Our team has planned ahead to ensure proper staffing (including overnight) throughout the weekend. Your dogs will be cared for by trained staff who know their routines and needs.

Limited Outdoor Time (Safety First!)

Extended outdoor play isn’t safe during extreme cold, so we’ll be keeping potty breaks brief with careful monitoring for temperature sensitivity especially for seniors, puppies, and short-haired breeds.

Enrichment Takes Center Stage

As an enrichment-based pet care provider, we’re built for moments like this! When outdoor play is limited we increase intentional indoor enrichment to keep dogs:

  • Mentally stimulated

  • Emotionally balanced

  • Physically comfortable

Did you know 20 minutes of sniffing is equivalent to an hour long walk?A tired brain is just as satisfying as a tired body. We’re experts at making that happen indoors. Think food puzzles, scent games, positive-reinforcement training refreshers, structured social time, calm rest periods, and individualized attention all tailored to each dog’s needs.

Extreme Cold Safety: What Pet Parents Should Know

Cold weather affects dogs differently based on size, coat type, age, and health. Here are general guidelines to help you make safe decisions during extreme winter temperatures:

How Cold Is Too Cold for Dogs?

While every dog is different, these are widely accepted safety benchmarks:

  • Above 45°F

    • Generally safe for most dogs, though some may still be sensitive.

  • 32°F–45°F

    • Small dogs, short-haired breeds, puppies, seniors, and dogs with medical conditions may become uncomfortable. Outdoor time should be limited and monitored.

  • 20°F–32°F

    • Risk of hypothermia and frostbite increases. Potty breaks only, typically 5–10 minutes max, depending on the dog.

  • Below 20°F

    • Dangerous for most dogs. Outdoor exposure should be extremely brief (just a few minutes) and avoided altogether for high-risk dogs.

  • Below 0°F

    • Unsafe for nearly all dogs. Even hardy breeds can be at risk for frostbite in minutes.

Cold Weather Safety Tips for Pet Parents at Home

If you’re spending time at home with your pets during the storm, here are a few important reminders:

  • Keep Outdoor Time Short

Even dogs who love the cold can be at risk for frostbite and hypothermia. Stick to quick potty breaks and head back inside.

  • Watch Paws & Skin

Cold pavement, ice, and de-icing chemicals can irritate paw pads. Wipe paws after walks and check for cracking or redness.

  • Provide Warm, Draft-Free Rest Areas

Make sure your pet has a cozy spot away from doors, windows, and cold floors. Extra blankets go a long way.

  • Don’t Forget Hydration

Cold weather can reduce thirst, but hydration is still critical especially for active dogs.

  • Add Indoor Enrichment

Bored dogs get restless! Try frozen lick mats, puzzle feeders, hide-and-seek with snacks, short positive-reinforcement training sessions. Mental work helps burn energy when walks are limited.

We’ve Got This—Together!

Winter weather can be unpredictable, but our commitment to your dogs never changes. Whether they’re spending the weekend with us or staying cozy at home: safety, enrichment, and well-being always come first.

If you have questions about your dog’s stay or the upcoming weather, don’t hesitate to reach out. We're happy to help!

Stay warm, stay safe, and give your pups an extra cuddle from us!
