Canine Enrichment at Scout's Honor. Multi Award-Winning Boarding, Daycare, Grooming, & Training Facility. The five types of enrichment naturally overlap because a single activity often engages multiple aspects of a dog’s well-being. For example, a romp in the ball bit is a scent-based foraging activity: foraging behavior satisfies nutritional and occupational needs, navigating through and walking on top of balls satisfies sensory and physical enrichment needs, and the social interaction with the caregiver during this activity satisfies the social enrichment need. Enrichment mirrors how wild canines experience the world using body, mind, and senses together. We are Bloomington, Indiana's only Fear Free enrichment-based facility meaning we simulate activities dogs would encounter in the wild to satisfy their physical and mental needs using only science-based positive-reinforcement dog training methods. Enrichment is a fundamental canine need that supports a dog’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Just like proper nutrition and exercise, enrichment provides essential stimulation that allows dogs to express natural behaviors, build confidence, and reduce stress or boredom. Incorporating enrichment into pet care services through agility, problem-solving activities, scent work, or group play ensures that dogs lead balanced and fulfilled lives. Every responsible pet care program views enrichment not as an optional luxury, but as a vital part of comprehensive and humane animal care. Our Hybrid Camp & Solo Camp programs provide the best balance of all five enrichment types. Learn more about the five types of enrichment and how we fulfill specific physical and mental at Scout's Honor. The 5 Types of Enrichment Transforming our Industry Meet our Co-Founders: Allison Jacobs & Kristen Perrus Allison's dogs, Scout and June, were kicked out of daycare at the facility Kristen managed. Kristen explained to Allison how dog daycare worked: there were sometimes 30 dogs in each play yard with one human to supervise the whole pack. The dogs at daycare were getting less stimulation than Allison was giving her dogs are home. Kristen explained to Allison that she tried to get her boss to allow them to incorporate enrichment into daycare, similar to zoos, but they thought it wasn't worth the extra expense. Allison and Kristen grew to become close friends while Allison grew her in-home pet sitting business. They volunteered for a non-profit dog rescue together fostering, training, and rehoming over 70 dogs together. In August of 2020 Kristen quit her job out of frustration: she couldn't make an impact on the well-being of the animals in her care under boss. Kristen drove to Allison's house afterwards to discuss what she was going to do next. Allison and Kristen decided to use their excess free time the pandemic provided them to expand Allison's in-home business together into facility services. Allison and Kristen's business model quickly gained international attention. They pushed the dog daycare industry forward by taking better care of animals and the humans caring for them. In their time outside of Scout's Honor, Allison and Kristen speak at international conferences educating their peers on the benefits of enrichment for animals, business, and employees. Want to learn more? "At Scout’s Honor we do things differently,” says Allison Jacobs, owner of Scout’s Honor Pet Retreat in Bloomington, Indiana. “We focus on individualized animal enrichment and on the people who are taking care of the pets. This all goes together hand in hand.” “Not only did we see the need for personalized pet care, but we also saw a need for our employees to be paid adequately and receive the benefits they deserve,” explains Allison. “We often hear that a trade-off for working with dogs is that you don’t get health insurance, paid time off, or other basic benefits you could get if you worked at places like Wal-Mart or Target. We have seen that push some amazing employees in other pet care businesses out of the industry. We knew that if our employees received adequate pay and benefits, we could retain them and grow them into experts in pet care. That was a big drive for us, helping make animal careers for people instead of just giving them a job." While we can't guarantee your dog will reach specific milestones on a set timeline, we guarantee that we will be here to guide and support you with any questions or concerns throughout and after your program. What is your training philosophy? We offer Fear Free, positive reinforcement training using only force-free methods and we do not use aversive techniques, dominance theory, e-collars or prong collars. 482075130_966476468962693_4453256958773713926_n Do you offer a guarantee? Training requires consistency from both our trainers and you, the owner. While we can't guarantee your dog will reach specific milestones on a set timeline, we guarantee that we will be here to guide and support you with any questions or concerns throughout and after your program. 1/8 FAQ Training FAQ FAQ What is a training evaluation and why do I need it? During your dog’s day at Camp, a certified trainer will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to observe how your dog responds to basic commands, cues and everyday distractions. This helps us understand what your dog already knows, where they can improve and how to best align training with your goals. Afterward, you’ll have a one-on-one phone call with our trainers to review the results, discuss program options and pricing and determine the best fit for you and your dog. For owners who prefer a more hands-on approach, we also offer an in-person consultation at a location of your choice. During this session, a trainer will observe your dog’s behavior in real time and work alongside you to address challenges as they occur. This allows us to see the behavior in its natural environment and collaborate on immediate strategies before recommending the ideal training program. Do you offer a guarantee? Training requires consistent effort from both our trainers and you as the owner. While we can’t promise that your dog will reach specific milestones within a set timeline, we can guarantee that our team will be with you every step of the way—offering guidance, support and answers to any questions you may have throughout your program and long after it’s complete. What is your training philosophy? We provide Fear Free, positive reinforcement training that focuses on building trust, confidence and a strong bond between you and your dog. Our methods are entirely force-free, meaning we never rely on punishment, aversive techniques or dominance-based approaches. We also do not use e-collars, prong collars or any tools that cause pain or discomfort. Instead, we focus on reward-based strategies that motivate and encourage your dog, helping them learn desired behaviors in a calm, supportive and humane environment. This approach not only produces more reliable results but also promotes a lifelong love of learning and strengthens the relationship between you and your dog. How often is my dog coming to training? Dogs attend training twice a week, either on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule, with private lessons held on Fridays. We recommend no more than 3 days per week for training and camp to ensure optimal results. What to expect while my dog is at training? During your dog’s training day, they will participate in three 30-minute one-on-one sessions with our certified trainers, each tailored to the behaviors and skills that matter most to you. Between sessions, your dog will have time to decompress and practice settling in a crate, helping them build calmness. Afterward, they can enjoy the rest of their day in their chosen camp program, whether it’s Day Camp or Solo Camp, ensuring a balanced mix of learning, relaxation and fun. Should I bring anything for my dog's day of training? For your dog’s training days, we recommend bringing their breakfast (if they eat kibble) or their favorite treats. Since treats are used frequently during training sessions as positive reinforcement, having familiar food helps prevent stomach upset and keeps your dog motivated and comfortable throughout the day. What is a transitional leash (Sidekick)? During training, your trainer will explore a variety of positive reinforcement tools to determine which works best for your dog and aligns with your training goals. For dogs that pull on the leash, get easily distracted or display reactivity, a transitional leash or “Sidekick” may be recommended to provide gentle guidance and support during walks. Your trainer will always ensure your dog is comfortable and confident with any tool used, recognizing that not every method works for every dog. The approach is fully personalized to maximize effectiveness while keeping your dog happy, safe and engaged.
