- Scout's Honor, Bloomington IN: Dog Boarding | Daycare | Grooming | Training
Voted the Herald Times Best of Btown Dog Boarding and Daycare in 2022. Now offering grooming and training. The scout's honor story by CEO & President, Allison If you would have asked me 15 years ago what I was going to do for a career after I graduated college I would have told you that I was going to be a professional musician. I started taking harp lessons at age six. I was a direct admit to the Indiana University (IU) Jacobs School of Music for Harp Performance in 2012. After two years of music school I knew with absolute certainty I did not want to be a professional musician. My burnout caused a decade long harp hiatus. I found another home at IU in the Media School. I was taking classes that interested me, but I still did not know what I wanted to do professionally. I was simultaneously working full-time as a retail manager at one of our local big box stores. I graduated in 2018 with a degree in Media and a separate degree in Italian Language & Culture. I had full intentions of going to graduate school for Media or Italian hoping I could find my true calling in academia. Around the same time I graduated undergrad, my dogs, Scout & June, were kicked out of their playgroup at local daycare they been attending regularly for two years. I wanted to continue to socialize them so while I was preparing for the GRE, I started pet sitting on Rover for income. I ensured my dogs were comfortable with each dog I let come into our house. We played games as a pack. We went on individual walks while the rest of the pack rested. At the end of the day, my dogs and their new friends were satisfied and tired. I met my business partner, Kristen, at a local agility class. Kristen was the manager of the facility my dogs had previously attended for daycare. I asked her why my dogs were not successful at the place she worked, but were successful in my new home based daycare. “Your dogs were bored,” she said. As a pet parent I was horrified to learn that my dogs rarely get interacted with while at daycare. The human interaction they would receive or witness are corrections for fighting. One person watching 30-60 dogs by themself seemed unsafe because the maximum I could personally handle was 15. After touring several dog daycares across the country I learned this was the industry norm. Kristen’s suggestions to implement enrichment, supervised play yards, and human:dog ratios were repeatedly denied. Kristen and I stayed in touch after that agility class. We co-founded a dog rescue with local dog trainers to train, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs that people had given-up on. While that rescue was active we were able to save over 70 dogs. My husband, Henry and I have always wanted to move to Maine. In February 2020 we were looking at houses around Portland with a realtor. In March 2020 the COVID pandemic became crushingly real and our dreams of moving cross-country were put on hold. In Late July 2020, Kristen drove to my house to tell me she quit her job. Henry and I were tired of having 15 dogs at our house everyday. We started the initial planning for Scout’s Honor: a science-based dog care facility. The first employee we hired was Kristen’s replacement at her old job, Zack in May 2021. Zack has a management degree and a minor in human resources from IU. Zack’s salary as manager was capped out at $15/hour with no benefits like health insurance or paid time off. There are a lot of people in our industry Zack that will work for low pay because they love working with animals. Scout's Honor officially opened June 28th of 2021. I never went to graduate school. I found my calling in life: create better pet care options and create career paths for those passionate about animal care. Today we have the largest and highest paid staff out of all dog daycare facilities in Indiana. Our business model has influenced our industry to be better. Our local competitors are in forums we have created to help other dog businesses incorporate enrichment into their programs. Kristen and I have had several speaking gigs at international industry conferences. We have collaborated with veterinarians and zoologists across the world to make our enrichment programs the best they can be. We won Best Pet Care Facility by the International Boarding and Pet Sitting Association in 2022. We were the cover story for Pet Boarding and Daycare in 2023. We have been voted Herald Times Best of BTown every year that we have been open. What makes Scout’s Honor great is our staff. Animal care is not a hobby for our staff. Animal care is a career. All Scout’s Honor employees complete their Pet CPR & First Aid certification in addition to 100 hours of virtual & in-person education on canine behavior and body language within their first 60 days of employment. After 90 days of employment, all employees are eligible to enroll in continued education that will earn them certifications like Fear Free Animal Handling, Professional Animal Care Certification Council, Certified Professional Dog Trainer, and more. Because of our commitment to science-based animal care, we are always looking for new ways to grow and improve.
